8th Grade ("I am..." Poem)
I am totally misunderstood
By Robria Newman
I am totally misunderstood.
I wonder if people will ever stop and think about my feelings.
I hear people call me disrespectful.
I see the way people's parents look at me in disgust,
I am totally misunderstood.
I pretend that it doesn't bother me.
I feel alone at times.
I touch the walls in the room that I'm trapped in looking for a way out.
I worry about my future.
I cry because I want people to see my loving insides.
I am totally misunderstood.
I understand that my actions really don't help the situation.
I say that I'll do better but people never give me the chance.
I dream that one day someone will attempt to get to know the real me.
I try to make it easier for people to see the inner me.
I hope someone smart, kind, and loving just happens to take a glance at me and not see me as totally misunderstood but as the real Bri.

7th Grade (I AM... Poem)
Fess Hawkins wrote a phenomenal poem that she titled "I Am". Her words are powerful and demonstrate her determination and strength.
I Am
By Fess Hawkins
I am the girl who is expected to succeed with straight As no Bs with no lower than a 4.0.
No one cares if I say let me be me.
I am the next one in line to go to college.
I want to be the girl to change history and make a difference in someone’s community.
I’m the middle child and I will let no one change me.
But don’t be fazed by the pretty face, long legs and the smile you can see from a mile away.
I am the girl who is full of surprises that when you look at me you think I couldn’t possibly be the next president.
But I am the girl who was told she could be anything.
Sticks and stones may break my bones but your works will never change me.
I am Fess.

7th Grade (Time Management)
By Caleb Carr
Have you ever wondered what your weaknesses and strengths were in your life? Well today I am going to tell you about my weaknesses and strengths. Then I am going to tell you how I manage my time, and how I can work on my weaknesses. So find your relaxing point and enjoy my essay.
One of my weaknesses is that I sometimes use improper grammar. If you have trouble with grammar then you are a part of my team,”the horrible grammar kids. The problem I have is that I know what I want to say but it comes out wrong when I say it. My other weakness is that when I mess up I like to verbally beat myself up. If you beat yourself up like I do then you are a part of the Verbal beaters club. Both of my weaknesses I need to improve on, and you should to so you can do well in your life. Also, I am too competitive when it comes to sports. I always want to prove to everyone that I can beat them in a certain area. Being competitive is not a good thing, and that’s why I am on the competitive freaks team. I really really need to work on that.
Now I am about to tell you all about my strengths. I have so many strengths that I can’t even remember them all. One of them is that I am a caring person. That’s why I don’t like to go to the hospital because I hate to see people suffer knowing that I have no way to help them. Another strength that I have is that I am self-confident. I believe that I can do anything if I put my mind to it. I also believe that I can accomplish anything. That’s why I push myself so hard in class because I know what I can do. Also I push myself so I can accomplish my future life goals. My last strength that I am going to talk about is that I am my own person and I don’t try to fit in with the crowd. I believe that I was born to be a leader not a follower. If you are a leader then you could influence other people to be like you. Being yourself can help you accomplish your goals. Being a follower can only get you into more trouble. Then if you follow other people then you will have fake friends. What I mean by that is that they will pretend to be your friends and try stopping you from accomplishing y6our goals. That’s why I am glad that I have these strengths.
Now I am going to tell you how I am going to tell you how to improve your weaknesses. A way that I can improve my grammar is by buying a book on how to speak with better grammar. Then my mom corrects me when I say things wrong. One way I cannot beat myself up is by when I get mad is to just think about good things in my life. I will try to improve my weaknesses from now on. Now I am going to tell you about how I manage my time. Right when I get home I do my homework right away. Then I straighten up my room if needed. Lastly I watch TV or play the video games, or if needed I will take a shower before. Then sometimes I read. I go to church on Sundays then I relax the rest of Sunday. In conclusion, it is always good to know your strengths, but also to work on your weaknesses. Thanks for reading and have a nice day.

7th Grade (Time Management)
By Deysi Juarez
I think that my weaknesses in school are turning in my math homework. I get off track easily in math. Reading is okay. I like reading; it’s just that when the class gets boring I fall asleep. In science I talk a lot with Seandrese and Patryanna. In lunch we have to sit with our 5th hour class and I think that’s not fair so we sometimes don’t sit with our class. Since Patryanna is almost in all of my classes we talk a lot and sometimes we even get in trouble. I specially have this weakness for doing Math homework. Sometimes I don’t get it and sometimes I feel like just not doing it. I’m kind of lazy sometimes.
My weaknesses at home are doing my chores; like taking out the trash, washing or doing the dishes, raking the leaves when it’s autumn and shoveling the snow when its winter and I don’t always babysit when I’m supposed to. My weaknesses as a sister are that I fight a lot with my brother. As a daughter my weakness is that I don’t know why but I just don’t trust my parents. I have no idea why. I can usually rely on my aunts or grandma when I need advice. My mom says I text too much and that I watch TV too much. I think I do too.
My strengths in school are in some classes I have a hard time staying on task. My favorite class is math but the only problem I have on Math is that I have trouble with math and I get off track easily. I’m good at social studies. I love reading so I read a lot at home. I also read in school when I have time. I like reading in the beginning of class we can read for like 15 minutes. In Drama I did a very good job. I’m good at science it’s just that Mrs. Fricke teaches too fast (for me) and I feel like she doesn’t teach like she’s suppose to. I participate in activates it’s just that sometimes I’m shy. I’m a good friend. All my friends can trust me to keep a secret.
When I first did the Where I Think My Time Goes. The hours of sleeping were about the same. The hours of grooming were about the same as well which was about 3 hours was daily. Eating was not exactly the same because sometimes I help my mom cook and sometimes I don’t. So when I do help I spend more time cooking. When I don’t help her I don’t spend 2 hours daily just eating. Working or chores was about the same. Recreation was also about the same. Not exactly close, but close enough. Time in school and studying was the same.
I think I need to spend extra time each night studying for math and social studies. In Math I’m having trouble because I don’t understand it that much. In social studies we did this worksheet to see how many states we know. I only know 12 states. So Mr. Collins said that we need to study our states. Each day I’ll spend like 2 hours studying instead of watching TV or playing on the computer.

7th Grade (Science Perfect Popcorn Project)
Marieme Ndoye spent her ISAT week focused on her testing but also working very hard to create the “Perfect Popcorn.” From seed to advertisement, Marieme’s work throughout the week showed her grasp of the major points of the unit her science class was just finishing and also her level of commitment to her studies in a non-traditional environment. Marieme’s “Letter to the Bank” showed her writing skills as she attempted to persuade the bank to give her company the loan she needed to purchase the perfect 25 acres of farmland. Using some of her math skills she determined that this was going to be a great investment for her company. After she got approval from the lending officer at the bank, she looked at different problems her strains of popcorn might encounter and talked about how those problems would affect her crop. Marieme and her business partner then attended a tasting hosted by the Popcorn Board and decided which two types of popcorn they would like to cross. Finally Marieme and her partner predicted the genetic outcomes for their crops and made sure that they were satisfied with the outcome. Once all the science was done and the crops were grown, Marieme and her partner designed an add that would help them sell their popcorn to the masses. Overall Marieme did a fantastic job and convinced me that if she were to go through all of the steps in the real world, her popcorn would win first prize! J

What my quilt says about me is that I’m a daddy’s girl. I love being with my dad, it brings the joy to my everyday life. I honor him so much he’s the reason I know how to ride a bike. I just love being around my dad so much I get this warm felling that I belong here in my soul when I’m around my dad.
My quilt also says that I love to dance ;dancing is my life. It shows how much I love music. I have been dancing for as long as I can remember I have always loved to dance and I don’t think I’m ever going to stop unless my legs fall of. There is not a day that goes by when I don’t listen to music. I love to listen to music that matches my mood. My quilt shows everything I love in my life.
There is a program that’s called Solhot that represents African American girls, such as me and some other girls that go to Franklin middle school. This program goes all over Champaign Urbana and other places. It makes me want to join an be one of the older sisters when I get into college that’s how much it has impact on me and my life. I am a smart wonderful girl in my eyes. I really don’t care what anybody could say or think about me. I love the quote (*sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never ever ever hurt me..!*).I am me for a reason and one reason only and that’s because I have a purpose on this earth and I believe I’m going become a successful woman in this world.
One thing I love more than anything is money I love money so much. I have noticed that each bill has a different smell to them. I wish money was a subject I would get an A in that class all the time!
I know sometimes I lack in my classes, but avid gets me back on track with all of the classes I’m having low grades in. How I contribute in my avid class is I have so many great Ideas for this class I just need to know how to share them.
